Yes, the conversation.

Not the birds and the bees.

Not the one about their friend you can’t stand.

No, no….

I’m talking about the conversation about rhythm.

In particular, I’m talking about when you say “So, son/daughter, are you interested in learning to play a musical instrument?”

And they say, to your parental delight, “Why, yes! I’d love to!”

And with visions of clarinets and violins in your head, you respond with, “Which one do you want to learn?”

And they answer “Drums! I want to play the drums!”

And you smile/cringe, and picture the next 15 years of your life set to that soundtrack.

You think for a moment, searching for just the right thing to say that encourages an interest in music and yet sends the musical inclinations in a different direction. You want to be wise and persuasive, but also inclusive of their interests: “How about we just get Wii Rock Band instead?”

You wait.

“Deal.”

Done!
