With Valentine’s Day coming up, the timing is perfect to show your appreciation for all the hard work and loving care that your nanny provides for your children and your family. Of course it is important to show appreciation along the way, but this holiday provides an opportunity to give your nanny a gift – whether it be a monetary bonus, a thoughtful present, or some heartfelt words of praise. After all, hers is a profession of caring, and this is a holiday (even if it is a cheesy one) that is designed to remember those you care about!

There is no set standard on what you should show your appreciation with, but a monetary bonus is the most popular way, especially if you did not give one at the end of the year or at Christmas (which is the typical time to do so). For a long term nanny a bonus of one to two weeks of pay is typical, but by no means mandatory. It is understandable if you cannot afford to give such a large bonus and it is likely your nanny will understand. If you would like to give your nanny a monetary bonus, but they have not been with your family for a long time, you can take a day’s pay and multiple it by the number of months they have been working for you.

Gifts made by the children, like artwork or cookies, are also a thoughtful way of showing your appreciation. Chances are you know your nanny better than I do, so as far as gifts go, they are only limited by your imagination.

Times are tough right now and if you cannot afford to give money or purchase a gift, then make sure to write a thoughtful and meaningful card to your nanny. You could also take them out to lunch and personal tell them how much you appreciate them.

Bottom line is that even if your nanny knows you appreciate them, it is still nice to receive a gift or hear words of praise.

For all those nannies out there, the same goes. Although you will not being giving a monetary bonus, you should still show your appreciation. Tell the family why you enjoy working for them and why you are thankful for having your job. You can buy thoughtful gifts or even make something yourself. Either way, enjoy the holiday and be appreciative!
