Day by Day Pregnancy Tip #12: Celebrate Being Halfway Through Pregnancy

There are lots of suggestions out there for how to make pregnancy special for women, especially since there are many aspects of pregnancy that are not so much fun. Some people suggest belly casts, others taking a photo each month of your growing belly and putting together a scrapbook, and others suggest a Month 7 vacation with just you and your spouse.

I personally think the vacation idea is a great one, even if it is just a night away somewhere different. If nothing else, it is a great way to catch your breath and focus on each other, and you can usually pull together enough frequent flier or credit card points to cash in for a free night if your cash flow is tight (that’s what I try to save my miles and points for – those things that you don’t realize you need until you need them!)

The halfway though pregnancy mark is also a big one worth celebrating at home, if for no other reason than a lot of the medical risks and complications are greatly diminished by this point in the pregnancy. By the time you make it halfway, you should know the gender (if you want to), have had a structural ultrasound, be done with prenatal testing ranging from basic to extensive (depending on your background, your age, and your choice), and have a good feel for your doctor and hospital (I highly recommend taking the tour of the hospital or hospitals where are you are thinking of delivering early, so if you find something you don’t like and need to change doctors in order to change hospitals, you can do so more easily). The risk of miscarriage is also dramatically reduced at this point in the pregnancy, which means you can rest easier knowing that you and the baby are likely going to make it all the way.

So make a point to celebrate being halfway through pregnancy – plan a special dinner, have your kids make the new baby a card, or do something else that is small but fun to mark the occasion. If nothing else, it will take your mind off how itchy your growing belly feels!
