I like to give gifts to people that are either a) on their registry or b) totally unique. To make something truly unique, you usually have to have it monogrammed. However, I get a little tired of putting names and initials on things, because that never feels very creative.
My new solution: Engrave Your Book. The best gift I ever gave was an engraved book to a soldier who was deploying just after his firstborn arrived. The book was designed to allow the dad to make notes every day to his son from the battlefield, so that even though he was missing out on a part of his son’s life, he was giving his son a unique part of his own life to appreciate later on. I had the cover engraved with a picture of the Iwo Jima memorial (the soldier is a US Marine). *That* is the kind of unique gift that makes gift giving such a pleasure.
I have also done these covers with a picture of a new born baby, along with the baby’s name and birth information. It makes for an elegant and special keepsake journal for the baby’s first year.
As I am prone to do when I really like an item, I asked the owner and creative force behind Engrave Your Book, Joe Mansfield, for some insights into his business. Here is what Joe had to say:
EHP: What do you like most about this job?
Joe: My favorite aspect of running my custom engraving business is curating the artist series and developing relationships with artist both local and worldwide; they keep me very inspired.
EHP: What is the strangest cover you have ever engraved?
Joe: The strangest cover I’ve engraved to date was a portrait of a naked British man holding a baby chimpanzee.
EHP: Do people request artsy covers most often? photos? monogrammed? what is the most common order?
Joe: Custom covers have been the most popular – the subject matter typically relates to whatever blog is currently featuring my product.
EHP: What do you hope to do next with EngraveYourBook? any products or services hoping to add/expand?
Joe: I plan on expanding the product line to include leather covers which fit other brands of notebooks, and continuing to grow the artist series collection.
