UPDATE: Our Winner is…. Sarah!!!
I have to say, of all the baby gifts I have ever given, bought myself, or received, this is my favorite. I’m not totally sure why – it is just a wooden block with some engraved lettering. But for me it captures what having a baby is all about – it’s cute, it’s simple, it’s momentous, it’s basic. The block is not painted or stained; it is just clean, elegant wood. One side has the first letter of your baby’s name (or last name). Another has the birth information. Still another side has the details of the parents and birth location. It is everything a memento should be: affordable, indestructable, and discreet.
What’s more, the people behind this item are some of the nicest, most artistic folks (and parents) out there. Sometimes, when a product really strikes me as fun and unique, I like to try and interview the people behind it. This interview was particularly fun:
EHP: What do you like most about this job?
Craft-e-Family: We get to spend everyday with each other and have our daughter here with us daily since she came home with us from China – it’s going to be hard sending her to kindergarten next year. We also work where we live so no long commutes and if you want to sleep in a little it’s ok because we’re internet based! The customers are always great too – made a lot of friends and ran into a lot of wow it’s a small world type situations.
EHP: What is the strangest item you have ever engraved?
Craft-e-Family: We’ve encountered some very unique names over the years on our baby blocks and are getting some really neat spellings now but nothing strange really – we only engrave what we make. We have received request to do the blocks in other languages and as long as they provide the translation for us – we’re more than happy to do so. We actually have a Danish set of kids blocks . . . now if I could only get the Mandarin version done.
EHP: The most heart-warming item you have ever engraved?
Craft-e-Family: That would have to be the adoption blocks we make – but they’re near and dear to our heart because of our daughter. The blocks that pull at everyone’s heart and make us tear up are our memorial blocks as it’s always sad to think about little ones passing so soon. I do always try to tell them that the memory never fades away but the pain will go away in time, as I also lost a daughter several years ago so I know how they feel and I hope that it helps them just a little.
EHP: What item do people buy the most often?
Craft-e-Family: Personalized Baby blocks of course.
EHP: What is your favorite product that you make?
Craft-e-Family: Well as I said earlier – it would be the adoption blocks because it’s just a subject that’s close to our hearts.
