I was discussing the topic of sleep last week with another mom, and we both commented on how odd the sleep habits of children really are. For instance, the hardest rule for us both to grasp is the fact that often times, an earlier bed time results in a *later* wake up time. That’s right, the more babies sleep, the more they sleep.
You read this in parenting and pregnancy books, but until you live it, it is hard to believe.
However, at the point, I am definitely a convert. I know that a late night and a missed nap, for instance, does not always mean that my son will sleep later or longer the next day. Nope. He sleeps later and longer the day *after* the next day. In other words, it takes some sleeping for him to access just how much more sleep he really needs to catch up.
So before you give up hope that you simply do not have a “sleeper” for a baby, try putting your child down earlier, rather than later, and see if the “more sleep=more sleep” rule works for you.

I never thought about it, but I think you’re right. When we put little one down at nine she usually sleeps longer. Hmmm… You’re on to something.
thanks SIL.
I’ll have to try that with our little guy. He’s a big fan of re-arranging his sleep schedule all the time, which makes for a tense mommy from time-to-time since I depend on his naps to get some good productive time in for work!
