Grandparents often play an important role in caring for and teaching our children these days, yet there is very little out there aimed at helping them do this unique, fun, and sometimes challenging job. What is even stranger is that the books and blogs aimed at grandparents and parents exist completely apart from each other. There are grandparent tip sites, and there are parenting tip sites. And never the domains shall meet.
In the real world, however, grandparenting, new parenting, pregnancy, baby gear – it all exists in and around and through all of our lives. That’s just the nature of life: there are not neat borders and boundaries.
What’s more, grandparenting is no more innate to us than pregnancy or parenting. Becoming a grandparent has all sorts of implications for identity, for relationships, and often for financial considerations. It requires something of its own learning curve as well: childrearing today is dramatically different from when today’s grandparents were young parents themselves, and – let’s face it – there are some parts of raising a kid that the brain helps us deliberately forget (does anyone really want to remember what teething or potty training was like?)
So how does a grandparent strike a balance between sharing the wisdom and experience that is timeless, and adjusting to and adopting the changes that have happened since they had small children?
Extra (Hour)dinary Parenting’s new series, “Grandparents, Grandchildren,” is designed to help today’s grandparents walk this fine line. Written by grandparents for grandparents, the series features tips and advice written specifically for this special relationship. That’s right, we are taking on some new (seasoned grandparent) authors who will be writing the grandparent series themselves.
At the same time, we will continue to feature our other regular series:
Monday Morning Memo Parenting Tips * Day by Day Pregnancy Advice * Executive Summary Product Reviews
By the way, if you would like to contribute to any of these series or have a product reviewed, let us know! We are always open to featuring other bloggers, as we did in this recent post.
We hope you enjoy “Grandparents, Grandchildren” and encourage you to send the articles to all the grandparents in your life. You can even sign them up to receive posts by email.
